Tarangire offers a superb backdrop studded with giant baobab trees, large herds of sauntering elephants and a constant business of life! Photographic opportunities are countless so come prepared. During the dry season (June to September) thousands of animals including elephant, buffalo, giraffe, wildebeest, kudu, and the rarely seen oryx migrate from the dry Maasai steppe to the Tarangire River in search of water. Lion, leopard and other predators follow. Birders are not let down, with a population of over 550 varieties recorded Tarangire is sure to impress. With impressive landscapes dominated by baobab trees, an enormous elephant population and over 550 varieties of bird, Tarangire offers secluded game viewing and loads of game – a winning combination in anyone’s book!
Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is a breathtakingly beautiful setting and the best place in Tanzania to see the Big Five and an exceptional place to interact with people from the Maasai tribe. The Ngorongoro Crater and surrounding highlands together form one of Africa’s most beautiful regions. Volcanic craters form stunning backdrops to some of the most fertile and richest grazing grounds in Africa. The most famous such crater is without question Ngorongoro, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and home to the highest density of big game in Africa, including all the big five and plenty of predators. Ngorongoro is justifiably one of the continent’s most famous safari destinations. You have the opportunity of a number of unique cultural options available to you at Mto Wa Mbu (en route to Ngorongoro) you are free to discuss with your guide at the time.
Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater
This morning we drive in to Ngorongoro Crater . Chances are good that four of the Big Five will show up, as well as a rich variety of birds, all viewed against the splendid backdrop of the thickly forested crater walls. Our picnic lunch on the crater floor will forever remain a unique memory. Varied terrains and dramatic landscapes consisting of forest, grasslands and both freshwater and soda lakes. Have your camera ready! The crater offers spectacular ‘up close and personal’ photographic opportunities.
Day 5: Central Serengeti
This morning after breakfast we depart Ngorongoro and drive to the central Serengeti. There is no rush today, enjoy the striking terrain as we make our way from the highlands of Ngorongoro down to the plains of the central Serengeti. Be mesmerised as you soak in this global gem! Wide open spaces with the odd lone Masai Warrior dotting the landscape, captivating vistas molded by ancient geological upheavals and wildlife so dense your sense are almost overwhelmed. You may like to visit Olduvai Gorge or a Masai Village on the way.
Day 6: Central Serengeti
Game Drives – Serengeti. The Serengeti, home to more than three million large mammals spread over vast endless plains. It is here that we may encounter the fascinating spectacle of the annual wildebeest migration. From January to March the herds can largely be found birthing their young in the southern area around Ndutu, before proceeding north through the centre and Western Corridor during June and July, eventually splitting to the west and north as they continue their way toward the Mara River. August to October sees dramatic river crossings which can only be considered Africa’s “greatest leap of faith”, before the herds return south in November to repeat this amazing instinctive procession all over again.
Balloon Safaris should be pre-booked.
Migration movements are dependent on the rains and may vary year on year depending on that seasons rainfall. We do our utmost to ensure you are placed correctly for this event.
The migration moves backwards and forwards throughout the shift (the Mara river may be re-crossed several times within the season)
Day 7: End of Itinerary
Breakfast at Leisure, then transfer to Sereonera air air strip for your flight to Kilimanjaro Airport and your onward flight home.
