The Mentawai Islands and North Sumatra are one of the most consistent areas on the planet. Every surfer needs to go on this adventure once in their lifetime. Ask anyone who has been there.
In season between April and October when swell swinging up from the Indian Ocean march south-west across the Indian Ocean and the light trade winds blow from the south-east. Even during the off season when the trade winds switch to west and north-west there are still classic waves to be had and the swells are still regular. Land camps and charter boats available. Blue water and tropical islands await you. Sea temperatures remain around 28°C.
We have 3 hectares of land on the southern tip of Awera Island, giving us 250m of west coast and 300m of east coast which come together on a beautiful sandspit. Across the channel on North Sipora Island is Tau Pejat village which is connected to Padang via various overnight ferries as well the "Mentawai Fast" ferry which takes just 3 hrs to cross the straight and runs 4-5 times a week. Getting to us is therefore quick and easy.
These traditional-styled thatch roof villas have 2 en suite bedrooms and a third loft room upstairs. Fully kitted kitchen, lounge and sea facing terrace with sea views for miles. They are perfect for couples, families and small groups of surfers. Each Villa has its own longboat with 15hp outboard, giving you total freedom to come and go as you please. Tau Pejat is a well stocked village 5 min away by boat. Veggies, fruit, beers and dry goods are readily available as well as an ATM which takes master and visa cards. You can use our local Indonesian boat driver/surf guides to take you surfing, fishing, shopping...all in your own time!
We have a small pantry at Bilou Villas which stocks items such as olive oil, 100% Arabica ground coffee (all the villas have coffee plungers), ciabatta bread, cheese, steak, lamb shops, mince meat, bacon, canned items (tomato paste, beans etc), honey, herbs (basil, oregano, rosemary etc).
We have the very basic BILOU BEACH BAR which opens during the late afternoon and serves cold beer and a healthy set "meal of the day" - Bilou guests pay $8.50 for the set evening meal.
If you don’t surf the snorkeling, fishing and beaching is world class. The Mentawai Islands are a hidden gem, for many years only enjoyed by travelling surfers and cruising sailors. There is so much more to these beautiful tropical islands than just the wave.

We have set dinners at the beach bar. Ciabatta bread is baked daily and delivered to the villas. We have fresh basil pesto and fresh tomato pesto for quick fix meals. As well as steak and lamb chops for the braai. We have a super healthy muesli for breakfasts. So there’s no real scary self catering. I guess it’s sort of soft catering. We have a small shop at the resort with all the imported items. Cheese, steak, canned plum tomatoes, marmalade, tortillas etc etc. All this is to keep the rate down to make Mentawai surf travel more affordable for families and small groups, but more freedom with surfing and adventures and more luxurious spacious accommodation. We only have 4 villas which also keeps the number of surfers down and the exclusive vibe of Bilou.
There is a village ten minutes across the channel by boat. Lots of fresh food, beer and snacks. Your driver can also do your shopping.
Watch spellbound as this fast and hollow righthander reels down the reef, just north of Bilou Beach. It slows down after it hits the Backyard corner and on higher tides becomes a hotdog wave for all skill levels. 5min away by boat, or a 10minute stroll down the beach.
Its waves like these that made the Mentawai’s famous. One of the most perfect and versatile waves on the planet. From heaving hollow barrels when its big, to smackable horseshoe bowls, to fun shoulder high peelers for the whole family, Telescopes has it all. The Swiss Army knife of waves. Multiple peaks and take off spots means everyone gets waves.
Further around from Outers you will find this legendary lefthander. Hardly ever goes flat. Can be a gas chamber barrel or big bowling faces depending on size and swell angle.
Just across the channel is this “pro’s only” lefthand drainpipe. This wave was originally named Suicides. A true test for those who know what they doing.
Keep driving past Telescopes and you will get to Scarecrows left. Picks up more swell than Tellies but the lineup can be a little less predictable. Make sure you are there when the Curry Bowl comes to life!
This is the exposed swell magnet righthander at the very top of our reef. Its starts as an A frame peak and can hold size. Breaks in deep water and can be surfed during all tides and has waves when everywhere else is flat.
Up around the back of the islands is Tikus lefts. This is a fun, all tide, all skills wave which reminds everyone of Maccas. Just cruise down the line or smack the lip repeatedly: you chose!
Situated at the tip of the headland across from Bilou Beach is this ledgy lefthander, which is usually overlooked as surfers are drawn to Telescopes. It likes a mid swell and mid tide and can deliver focused wedging barrels.
